The Ugandan rugby community is mourning the untimely passing of Ronnie Kayondo, the talented flyhalf from Kampani Eagles Rugby Club and an old boy of Makerere College School (MACOS). Kayondo tragically lost his life after sustaining a head injury during the Uganda Rugby Premiership match between Toyota Buffaloes and Kampani Eagles on Saturday evening at Kyadondo Rugby Club.
He was rushed to Kampala Hospital, where he was receiving medical attention, but sadly, he was pronounced dead on Sunday, February 9, 2025.
In a heartbreaking joint statement, Kampani Eagles RFC and the Uganda Rugby Union confirmed the news:
“The Uganda Rugby Union, Kampani Eagles RFC, and the wider rugby community mourn the loss of this promising young player, who had so much to offer. Our thoughts and prayers are with Ronnie’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”
Kayondo had been a dedicated member of the Eagles since the club’s early days. Just last year, at the Eagles Rugby Club Awards, he was honored with the special “Award From Above.”
His loss is a huge blow to Ugandan rugby, and tributes are pouring in from teammates, fans, and the entire sports fraternity. Rest easy, champ.
