Makerere University emerged as the undisputed champions of goalball at the 1st Eastern Africa University People with Disabilities Games.
The premier university claimed victory in both men’s and women’s categories during the tournament held from 6th to 8th June, 2025.
The event provided a platform for student-athletes with disabilities to compete at the highest level while promoting awareness and understanding of adaptive sports.
The historic three-day championship took place at Makerere University’s sports facilities and brought together universities from across the Eastern Africa region to compete in adaptive sports including goalball and sitting volleyball.
Makerere University’s athletes demonstrated exceptional skill and determination in goalball, a Paralympic sport specifically designed for athletes with visual impairments.
The inaugural Eastern Africa University People with Disabilities Games represented a significant milestone in inclusive university sports across the region.

Goalball is one of the few sports created specifically for athletes with visual impairments. Players wear eyeshades to ensure fairness, and the game relies heavily on auditory cues from the ball, which contains bells.
