Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a science based University in south-western Uganda. In recent years, if one was asked about MUST, everyone would say that it is a university for medical students only without knowing that there are other courses and activities that MUST participates in.
As it is for other universities and higher institutions of learning to take part in co-curricular activities such as sports MUST has also been doing the same though it has not been sounding and performing well. For the last two years, there has been a progress in most of the sports activities that are taking place within MUST, National and at international levels.
Among their best achievements was the granting of permission to participate again in the University Football League (UFL) despite being banned sometime back when it was alleged that MUST was using players who were not their own. After prolonged pleading by MUST Sports Union officials, the ban was scrapped off.
Atukunda Genesis, Finance Secretary MUST Sports Union thanked the university management for supporting them to ensure that the sports glory of MUST is revived.
“We had been banned but we appealed to be part once again and because of student’s prayers and God’s grace it has finally come true and we hope for better results’’ Atukunda told Campus Bee. MUST was drawn in group A with Kyambogo University, Kabale University and University of Kisubi (UniK) and will open by hosting UniK on 15th February 2020.
In December 2019, MUST also took part in the 8th edition of the Inter-University games which was held at UniK where it emerged 11th out of 30 universities that participated in the competitions. MUST won various medals in different games such as scrabble, chess among others and a team will be sent to represent MUST in African games to be held in Kenyatta University in Nairobi this year.
The current Sports Union chairperson Mr. Tumwesigye Crescent thanked MUST students body for their cooperation despite the challenges they always face, he also requested them to prepare for this semester’s sports gala where new sports activities will be introduced.
Campus Bee has also learnt that there are ongoing improvements in MUST sports facilities such as the new football pitch at Kihumuro Campus.
