Sunday 4th June was the season finale of The SMACK League and it all went down at Makerere’s Impis rugby grounds for the greater part of the day. The SMACK league completed their inaugural season that saw The Devils of 2004 emerge champions.
The SMACK league is a football league of St. Mary’s College Kisubi old boys where they form teams according to their years while in high school. In a show of solidarity and togetherness, their league called for and organised a friendly match with the Ntare Lions League who have had over 6 seasons of competition.
Ntare Lions League is comprised of teams made up by Ntare School, Mbarara old boys. In a dramatic showdown, SMACK secured an extra time penalty that put them level with Ntare who were 1 goal up already from the early minutes of second half.
As crazy as it could get, in the penalty shootout, Ntare fans objected to the referee’s decision to cancel a penalty that hit the nets before blowing out wide because the nets could only cover half of the big rugby posts they were using in the field. The shootout therefore ended pre-maturely with both teams at 3 goals.
The leagues are a form of togetherness and besides the fun and competition, they play a vital role in bringing old students of schools together to reminisce and remember their olden days.
The old boys’ league initiative was started by Ntare School old boys who play every Sunday at Kyadondo grounds and was gradually adopted by SMACK old boys who play at Bat Valley every fortnight and consequently Mbarara High School old boys who play from MUBS grounds.
