Uganda Christian University’s remarkable performance at this year’s East African games has garnered them medals in the various sports disciplines and accolades amongst their peers. But their composure while on pitch irrespective of them being hosts and fantabulous gameplay is most intriguing earning them the right to be the EAU rugby champions of 2014.
Pumps, spears, racking, fishing and tackles were all the anxious fans gathered for at the Namilyango College rugby grounds in the wee hours of Friday morning. In a cut and throat match final between UCU and Makerere University, UCU took the upper hand beating their opponents ferociously in the first minutes of the game. Makerere too retaliated with a few skillful tries from a one Mukiga but just only to keep up with the race.
UCU side led by Kalule, Makumbi and Wocorach Phillip extra ordinal play continued to impress until Mukiga defied the rules of the game by pouncing on Atim John Paul of UCU who had initially landed him a breath taking tackle, which left him, grasping for breath on the ground. A fracas ensued between the Makerere and UCU players plus their respective loyalists.
In the end, the match was forfeited in favor of UCU on merits of technicality and misconduct that the Makerere team had exhibited.
Nevertheless the game was 28 – 12 in favor of UCU before penalization. Asked about the team’s prospects and ability to retain this medal even at future tournaments, UCU rugby coach assertively said “All my players are still in playing limit. Most of them in second year and I do believe it’s all about building a winning culture.”
In another die hard match between Kyambogo University and Uganda Martyrs University Nkozi, the humble Nkozi side 28 to zero, exorbitantly thumped Kyambogo.
Kyambogo was debased when they failed to turn up for their game at 10am in the morning. A ten-minute allowance was granted to the team but still failed to turn up prompting the official bench to award a walk over. It’s still unclear why the Kyambogo team forfeited the match. It’s alleged that the wrangles transpiring in the Kymabogo camp may have led to the boycott albeit continue to give player crisis due to injuries for their absenteeism around the pitch.
In the third place was United States International University (USIU) from Kenya after they beat fourth place Makerere University Business School (MUBS) 10 to zero.
In fifth is Mount Kenya University (MKU), Uganda Martyrs University (UMU) took sixth place while KEMU and Kyambogo University where in the bottom seventh and eighth positions respectively.
