The Uganda Christian University (UCU) guild government defeated Makerere University (MUK) guild 3-1 in a friendly match that took place at the UCU new pitch during the weekend, Saturday.
The game that started at 10:30 am saw the guests nearly leave the pitch goalless until one careless player from the UCU scored an own goal in their net, perhaps to save the opposite team from an embarrassment.
The speaker of the MUK guild speaker Yoram Burobuto, and the Information Minister of UCU, Igumira John were in talks with the sports minister of the university Polo Matundo for a while until these actually materialized into an actual game.
“It was a game to look out for. The possession of UCU on the pitch was just too good,” said Igumira.
The game was part of a series of activities that the guild had lined up during the Guild Week from the 17th to 22nd July, an initiative of the current guild government where the guild hoped to give back to the students’ community. The activities run for an entire week where the officials engaged in roles like serving food in the DH, the boy and girl, sensitizing the students of the university policies, and the guild concert on Friday evening among others.
To crown the week, there was also an inter faculty tournament final that the guild organized to have faculties compete and a trophy given to the wining team. The final took place on the same day with the MUK game. The 90 minutes ended 1:1. The teams however went into a penalty session where Bachelors of Project Planning and Entrepreneurship (BEPP) emerged winner after defeating Bachelors of Business Administration 4 to 3.
Apollo Biryomurirwe, the MP of the wining team before the games bought his team jerseys as a way to motivate his players throughout the competition.
“People thought we were not going to win, but I trust my players” says Apollo.
