A welcome signal was sent to the St Lawrence University fraternity after being written on a 4-0 loss at the home ground of Nkumba University (Beach Boys) “Blues” last year’s runners-up yesterday evening.
It all started in a slow style that had Nkumba fans in a mute mode until the 30th minute when Fred Gwoto broke the silence and doubts that had been experienced in the first 25 minutes of the game when he netted a cross from Solomon Ovoyo.
The hours old in the UFL, SLAU could not maintain the pressure from the beach boys as they had gained pace, Nkumba doubled their efforts to lead soon after in the 40th minute when Sharif Kimbowa completed Fahad Nsubuga’s cross far away from the right side of the 18 box.
Kimbowa who is in his second year at Nkumba had a serious come up this edition despite missing part of last edition due to a thigh injury he acquired late 2015 (it is the second half of the game when he finished Emmanuel Wasswa’s loop by a head in the 65 minutes of the game).
SLAU were facing a one man down after Mukiibi Cyrus was shown a red card for a foul imposed on Nkumba’s captain Waswa in young minutes of the second half. The Rubaga based campus could not hold back but their unfair playing in the added minutes cost them after fouling Mulishid Mugwaanya.
Hassan Kivumbi took a free kick to brace the day and wrapped things up in the 91st minute giving Nkumba a good lead at home in their first match.
Nkumba University sports tutor and football team head coach Patrick Ssebuliba said that they are determined to bringing back the lost hopes in their funs and student’s.
“After losing last year’s final against Kampala University was a lesson to us, students and funs lost hope but this is the right time for us to prove to Uganda that we deserve it,” said Ssebuliba.
Nkumba will play Makerere University Business School in an away debut which has made Nkumba believe they will take it all since they have had a good away record.
