The Nile Special University league quarter finals started today with Uganda Christian University [UCU] hosting Uganda Martyrs University [UMU] at the university main pitch.
The game started at around 2:30 pm with both teams bringing as many moral boosters as possible.
It was an engaging match. This was the first time UCU had such many supporters and in extremely large numbers.
Screams were heard all over the pitch, with so much noise from the vuvuzelas dominant.
A scuffle ensued during the match as some UMU supporters were seen beating up a UCU supporter who was blowing these extremely loud tubes in their ears. It was not until the university police intervened that some arrests were made.
It was a tight match for the hosting team. Both teams put up a strong defensive against their adversaries. UMU dominated in ball possession with a kawowo only typical of an Arsenal match.
The game ended in a draw 2-2.
It was, however, a win for UMU as they would be qualifying for the semi-final as UCU is knocked out of the league.
The referee ended the match and UMU students and supporters were seen ululating in celebration as they ran into the pitch to congratulate their players.
In another mood, UCU players were seen get so emotional and driven into tears as their team was knocked out.
When asked why crying, a one UCU player found sobbing replied, “We really thought we were going to win and now we have been beaten.” Left with no kind words for the player, I simply proceeded with my interview after which I walked away.
The next game will be tomorrow between Makerere University and Kyambogo University at the Luzira Play Ground.
Later in the league, Nkumba University will verse Gulu University while Busitema will verse Kampala International University.
