University of Kisubi is yet to make a ‘big name’ in Sports despite two attempts at Uganda’s prestigious University League. They lost to Kyambogo University 2-1 in their last appearance in the 2020 – the 9th edition of the league and since then have been building a great team that can challenge the ‘big teams’ in order to emerge victorious.
This time round however, the players say they are more determined than ever.
“We want to make it big this time,” says Edward, the team’s left back, “we have a good team this time round and we are ready for anything. I believe this is the opportune moment for us to show those big boys that we are worth it.”
The University team is being guided by a coach who is commonly known as Coach Figo (not the former Portuguese player) whom the players believe has transformed the team to the best that it has ever been.
Even though the team hasn’t reached scaring heights in the friendly matches with the most recent match ending in a 2-2 draw, the improvement in possession cannot go unnoticed, says their captain.
“We have a great midfield filled with brilliant talent, we have the best defence so far. It is only the striking line that has not yet gotten sharpened enough but the coach is working on it. All I can tell the other University teams is to wait for us. We are coming for that trophy.”
With various Universities like St.Lawrence and Ndejje University promising to become hard nuts to crack, the 10th edition of the Uganda University League could be another interesting league to look out for this year.
Defending champions Uganda Christian University (UCU) are also ready to lock horns with anyone who wants to usurp their champion powers while Kyambogo University is up to revive their 2018 prowess that saw them lift the trophy past Kampala University that year.
The League is scheduled to start on 9th March although the fixtures are not yet out as University teams continue to register.
