Joseph Gonzaga Ssewungu the Kalungu East Member of parliament has put the blame on the University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe for the current unrest at Makerere University where students are involved in running battles with police protesting the cumulative tuition increment of 15%.
The law maker made the remarks last week while addressing journalists at parliament, blaming Nawangwe for failing to dialogue with students in time and instead resorting to military yet the students have a right to demonstrate.
Mr Ssewungu who is a member on the parliamentary Education committee said; “Nawangwe is a politician working under a given pressure, that’s why he went to freedom square and barricaded himself with Mambas. Students have a right to demonstrate, they can demonstrate day by day even for the whole year. The moment he hears students are demonstrating, he calls the military police . He is there intimidating students on Twitter, as if twitter is there to handle students’ issues.”
“How can military police come to beat female students? Military police is supposed to deal with errant soldiers not students!” He added.
