Police in Bushenyi District are currently investigating the tragic death of a student at Kampala International University (KIU), Western Campus.
The deceased has been identified as Isaac Otieno Ochola, 33, a Kenyan national pursuing a Masters Degree in Internal Medicine.
According to Mr. Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, the body of the deceased was discovered on Saturday after neighbors noticed a foul smell emanating from his room at Hannington Hostel in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.
Upon alerting the private security guard, who then contacted the police, officers visited the scene, recorded statements from neighbors, and conveyed the body to KIU Teaching Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination.
During the investigation, it was revealed that the deceased had been residing at the hostel and was undergoing treatment for a psychiatric disorder. Mr. Alex Tumusiime, one of the neighbors, reported that upon entry into the room, police found various medications, including pethidine hydrochloride injections and Clonazepam, as well as syringes placed on a table near the bed.
The decomposing body was found to be well-dressed.
The discovery of the medications and documents indicating the deceased’s psychiatric condition has raised questions surrounding the circumstances of his death.
As investigations proceed, students and staff await further updates from authorities regarding the tragic loss of one of their own.
