A mob in Senegal chased down a suspected homosexual in a Dakar university, causing serious damage to buildings on the campus.
The mob was agitated by rumours that the Cheikh Anta Diop University male student hit on another male student in the campus’ showers, breaking all hell lose.
Amateur videos circulating social media show a group of students harassing a young man in the campus locker rooms.
The accused is ordered to show his face to the cameras as the mob shove him around the locker room.
He however managed to escape the mob, prompting a man-hunt all-round the campus.
When the mob failed to catch him, the students resorted to burning down buildings in the institution.
The agitated mob also ransacked a bank, forcing the staff to be evacuated immediately.
The suspected homosexual is said to have hid in the offices of the head of campus security prompting a heated exchange between the students – who wanted him to come out – and the security officers.
The students then went and burned down the buildings belonging the security officers.
Last October, Senegalese President Macky Sall told French news channel iTELE that the country was not yet ready to “decriminalise homosexuality”.
Simply being gay is punished by up to five years in prison and fines of up to about € 2,286. Even just hitting on someone can land you in prison for attempted homosexual relations.
