Wonders never cease! Odd as it may sound, a prominent university has introduced a policy that requires students to get permits from the authorities before conducting any sort of student communication or speech, including religious speech, anywhere on campus. Students are no longer allowed to even preach to their classmates without that permit.
Students were also told by the university that they must stop inviting other students to their student union to attend group events and to also stop approaching them to engage in religious discussions of any sort unless they had an express permit allowing them to do so.
North Carolina State University, abased in U.S.A., introduced the policy requiring a permit that “requires a permit for any form of commercial or non-commercial speech, which the policy broadly defines as ‘any distribution of leaflets, brochures, or other written material, or oral speech to passersby.
Grace Christian Life, a registered student group in the North Carolina State, was told that without a permit, they must stop approaching other students o preach to them or even invite them to attend events the student union may have organised, something that they re not amused with
“Colleges are supposed to be places where ideas are freely shared – not gagged,” Grace Christian Life President Hannalee Alrutz is quoted as saying.
One of Uganda’s Christian-faith-based universities recently issued a similar regulation, this time outlawing the conduct of any non-Anglican religious activity on its campus premises. That regulation is currently the subject of a Parliamentary investigation following a petition filed by concerned students.
