Alionzi Lawrence, a former Makerere University Guild President, has been elected Mayor of Arua City for the 2026–2031 term, marking a significant milestone in his political journey from student leadership to city governance.
Alionzi was declared mayor-elect following the conclusion of the city’s mayoral polls, securing a decisive mandate from voters across Arua City. Shortly after his victory was announced, he expressed gratitude to residents for entrusting him with what he described as a “sacred mandate.”
“By the will of the great people of Arua City, I was declared Mayor-elect this morning. I am deeply humbled by your trust,” Alionzi said in a statement. “Your vote is a sacred mandate we shall repay tenfold through committed service over the next five years.”
The mayor-elect thanked God, the people of Arua City, and his campaign team for their support, pledging inclusive leadership and people-centred service. His victory has been welcomed by many, particularly young people, who see it as a sign of the growing influence of youth leadership in national and local politics.
Alionzi rose to prominence during his time as Guild President at Makerere University, where he was known for outspoken leadership and mobilization among students. His transition from university politics to city leadership reflects a broader trend of former student leaders taking up key roles in public office.
As he prepares to assume office, expectations are high that Alionzi will prioritize urban development, youth empowerment, service delivery, and accountability in Arua City. His five-year term officially runs from 2026 to 2031.
The Arua City mayoral race was closely watched, with Alionzi’s win underscoring strong voter confidence in his leadership vision and track record.
