Opio Alex Ongom has been declared the winner of the hotly contested Gulu University guild presidential election.
He secured the position of the 24th Guild President for the 2025-2026 academic year by garnering 1,294 votes.
This, according to official results released by the Guild Electoral Commission on 5th April, 2025, defeating three other candidates in the race.
Openyrwot Brian came in second with 898 votes, while Odong Steward Howard and Obara Ronald David received 387 and 232 votes respectively.
The election saw a significant turnout of Gulu University students eager to select their next student leader.
Opio, a student from the Faculty of Medicine, will now lead the student body for the 2025-2026 academic year, representing student interests and concerns to the university administration.
His victory marks a significant achievement for medical students at the institution, who have traditionally been less represented in student leadership due to their demanding academic schedules.
University officials are expected to organize a swearing-in ceremony in the coming weeks to officially install Opio Alex Ongom as the new guild president.
