The tension caused by both academic work and the university politics is not a matter to be taken lightly. Characterized by uncertainty and worry is this year’s political season.
So far, all the parties have presented all their flag bearers except for NUP which seems to have about five contenders as they have not yet held their Primary elections.
On Friday evening, Ssekanjako Masuudi, one of the most powerful NUP contenders, with his crowd of supporters shook the four walls of the University as they moved along the pathways shouting “Wewe Wewe People Power, Our Power” as they held their numerous red and white striped NUP umbrellas.
Many of the students around campus at the time thought a strike might have been going on as the sound of “Wewe” is characteristic of the university’s strikes. It was a false alarm though as the group seemed to only be creating awareness of their candidate.
This comes at a time when the NRM party flag bearer Wycliffe Morgan put up his huge banner making his claim known to the Kyambogo population.
The silent works of the FDC flag bearer Serge Tumwiine have not gone unnoticed. It has not been forgotten that of recent he was the one behind the administration’s acceptance of students to access the university premises with their bags after about two months of their illegality in campus. This was after Serge peacefully approached the administration in senate and requested this of them. The student fraternity has since been grateful.
It is still difficult to tell who of these will be the 18th Guild president as the female NUP party contender Nalubanga Hanifa has been promised the support of the female students. Each one seems to have an equal number of supporters and we can only hope for the best candidate to win the election in March.
