NBS Television’s youthful news anchor and reporter, Canary Mugume on Monday afternoon nearly got a thorough drubbing from angry Makerere University students. This happened during a meeting between the guild leadership and the university management to resolve the ongoing impasse.
The irate students claimed they were not happy with Mugume’s “biased reporting” and accuse him of siding with their “oppressor” (University management) while covering the ongoing strike.
The students were in a closed door meeting with management in the main building to resolve the ongoing strike against the 15% cumulative tuition policy when Mugume together with his cameraman entered the venue.
The two were welcomed with insults from an already charged audience who ordered for their exit. They seemed to have taken it as a joke until the irate students threatened to beat Mugume. Police intervened and advised Mugume to leave.
They said that the reporter was against their efforts to force the University to drop the policy when he reported that there was calm at the University last week which they claimed was a lie.
One student who preferred anonymity before talking to this website said that Mugume and his workmate Samson Kasumba were on the side of ‘the tormentor’ adding that they will not be allowed to cover events at the University again.
“Mugume had a damning report on the Makerere strike last week on Wednesday, downplaying that there is a strike at Makerere. He also carried propaganda that Makerere students are under influence of drugs. This was a statement by the acting VC.” The Student Said.
Will the ongoing strike against the 15% cumulative tuition policy continue today? We shall keep you posted.
