In an unprecedented move, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, has publicly released his complete academic credentials dating back to his primary education.
The surprise move is aimed at addressing recent social media allegations questioning his qualifications.
The statement, reveals Prof. Nawangwe’s journey from being the top student in Uganda’s 1969 Primary Leaving Examination to earning his PhD in Architecture from the Kiev Institute of Civil Engineering in 1989.
Addressing specific allegations about his professorial qualifications, Nawangwe clarified that he submitted five peer-reviewed publications for his promotion to Professor, which were vetted by an external expert.
He also noted that, contrary to claims by critics, the publication of two books was never a mandatory requirement for professorship at Makerere University.

Regarding his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, the statement confirms he submitted 14 peer-reviewed publications, exceeding the minimum requirement of 10 publications for the position.
“I hope that this clarification will put to rest the debate about my academic credentials,” Prof. Nawangwe stated in the document.
The release comes amid broader controversies surrounding his administration, with critics raising concerns about management practices at East Africa’s oldest public university.
