The FDC Chapter Makerere University on Wednesday held a joint press conference with other party leaders from different Universities of Kampala University, Kampala International University and Kyambogo University to address various issues like the recently introduced Mobile Money and social media tax, the 15% Makerere tuition increment among other issues.
The team headed by the Chapter President, Edmand Kahiigi, advised Parliament to suspend and investigate the Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe whom they think is “mentally unstable” following various policies that he has been implementing at the Wandegeya based campus.
“We are requesting the general public and the Speaker of Parliament that let Professor [Nawangwe] be suspended and be investigated on the way he conducts duties in his office since he became the Vice Chancellor.
Meals are to be scrapped off from halls of residence, the halls of residence are going to be privatized, at the same time he is increasing the tuition. It is raising suspicion, he might be a mad mad, so we may seek for medical help from Butabika hospital to confirm that the professor is indeed in a good health state,” Kahiigi told journalists.
Kahiigi also sent a message to the first lady who also doubles as the Minister of Education and Sports that they (students) will fight to see that this tuition policy does not pass. Kahiigi added that for them to accept this policy, Makerere Council should provide accountability for the previously paid tuition because he sees no improvement ever since he joined Makerere in 2015.
“There is nothing that shows that anything has been improved. The services that I found here are the ones that are still there. So if the University Council wants to convince us to accept the 15% tuition increment, let it first come out and give accountability for the money that they have been receiving for all these years.” said Kahiigi.
Kahiigi also threatened to impeach the seven-member committee that passed the new tuition policy beginning with the Guild President, Were Salim, who he thinks connived with the administration to betray the entire student fraternity.
