Ssuubi Henry Kiyimba is set to defy the odds and graduate with a first-class honors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Makerere University, marking the culmination of an inspiring journey that started with online ridicule.

When Ssuubi arrived at Makerere four years ago, his unconventional choice of luggage, including a “Metallic Suitcase” and an “Osofio in London plastic bag,” became the subject of viral social media mockery. Little did the online trolls know that behind the seemingly humorous images was a determined young man with aspirations beyond the surface.

Admitted on Government Sponsorship for Bachelor of Science with Education (Economics), it turned out that Ssuubi’s true passion lay in Mechanical Engineering. The attention-grabbing images caught the eye of Eng. Jaffer A’ita Joel, an infrastructure developer and CEO of Joadah Consult Limited. Impressed by Ssuubi’s background and humility, Eng. Joel decided to sponsor Henry’s tuition, under one condition – that Makerere University would offer him his dream course.

Fortune favored Ssuubi when Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, himself an engineer, intervened to facilitate the change in Henry’s course. This pivotal moment marked the beginning of Ssuubi’s journey into the world of Mechanical Engineering.

As the years passed, Ssuubi dedicated himself to his studies, culminating in a groundbreaking final-year project titled “Development of Liquid Pyrolytic Fuel from Waste Plastics.” In simpler terms, he successfully explored the creation of petrol from discarded plastics, showcasing his innovative approach to engineering.

Now, on the cusp of graduation, Ssuubi Henry Kiyimba has not only defied the mockery he faced at the beginning of his university journey but has also secured a bright future. He is set to graduate with first-class honors in Mechanical Engineering, Class of 2024, and has already secured a job at Uganda Baati Ltd.
