A total of 21 graduates of the bachelors of Nursing Science program that finished through Uganda Christian University (UCU) have dragged the university to Court.
The plaint that Campus Bee has read was filed on the 26th of July, yesterday at the Mukono High Court. In the plaint, the students accuse the university of defrauding them of their money when the university admitted them to do nursing when it did not have necessary requirements.
The univeristy, according to the plaint, was not certified to teach the course leading to the students degrees being crossed out by the government for not being credible.
The plaintiffs seek relief arising from “breach of contract, breach of statutory duty, fraudulent or negligent misrepresentation unjust enrichment, and violation of the plaintiffs’ human rights protected by articles 30, 39 and 40 (2) of the constitution”
Background
In 2016, there were accusations that UCU nursing science program did not meet the minimum requirements being admitted with one subject less of chemistry or biology.
The said students among others applied to the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council (NCHE) im the same year and their applications were rejected on grounds that they did not meet the body’s minimum qualifications even when they had a university degree.
The Mukono based institute rushed to its defence explaining that “UCU started before the National Council of Higher Education (NHCE) was instituted, most of the courses taught were given blanket accreditation…” reads a story the University paper, The Standard ran last year.
The Standard also said the response by the NCHE recommended some changes but was silent about the program not being accredited.
UCU battles in the Mukono court
The university is still struggling with a case in Mukono court where two law students sued the university last year. The students claimed they were not given a fair hearing before they were expelled following accusations that the duo led a demonstration on the university soil.
None of the said plaintiffs was available for comment by press time. Campus Bee will avail more information about the story as it develops.
