The Makerere University community has joined hands with activists to demand the release of jailed Kawempe South aspiring Member of Parliament and former Makerere Guild President Roy Ssemboga.
Ssemboga, who also doubles as the People Power head of institutions wing was arrested last week with other eight youth leaders. The arrest happened in Mulago over unclear charges. According to Kyadondo East Legislator Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine, the nine leaders were found having a chat in Mulago before being whisked away by Police.
“They were found around Mulago, in a home, having a chat and taken to the Police. Roy was later driven to CPS where he is still being held.” Bobi Wine posted on Friday.
Ssemboga’s arrest has sparked off an online campaign dubbed “Free Ssemboga Roy” and it is currently gaining more activists jumping on board to demand the release of the former Makerere leader. Makerere students have also joined to demand his release with back to back posts.
Despite being a People Power diehard, Ssemboga’s Flag Bearer position for the pressure group isn’t guaranteed following the emergence of Kazibwe Bashir Mbazira, a journalist who also intends to run for the same position under People Power.
Kazibwe’s intentions to challenge Ssemboga have sparked off another conversation online as Makerere students continue to ask him to look for another position, citing Ssemboga’s loyalty to the struggle.
We will keep you posted!
