Makerere University Department of Journalism and Communication awarded the best students in journalism, communication, and photography at the annual media convention 2024 held on September 3, 2024, at Makerere University.
Miriam Najjingo walked away with the Cranmer Mugerwa Photojournalism award. Oroma Hope got the PRAU Communication award as the best student in communication while Olara Moses was awarded the Tebere-Mudin journalism award as the best journalism students for 2023/24.
The 2024 annual media convention was held under the theme: Harnessing Artificial Intelligence and social networks to combat misinformation in Uganda.
The guest of honour Hon. Kabbyanga Godfrey, state minister for ICT, urged stakeholders to join efforts and develop strategies to counter misinformation.
“As the ministry of ICT, we urge all stakeholders like the academia, media houses, NGOs, etc to collaborate on the development of strategies that can counter misinformation. The government of Uganda is committed to investing in research to tackle this phenomenon,” Hon Kabbyanga Godfrey Balu said, adding, ” it is essential for the esteemed gathering here to reflect on the transformative power that AI holds to our society influencing several aspects of our daily life including communication”.
The department also bid farewell to one of its long-serving lecturers Dr. Adolf Mbaine who will be relieved of his duties in October. Adolf thanked Makerere University for letting him teach at the department of journalism and prayed that the department is granted a school status.
“I am very grateful to Makerere for allowing me to teach for this long at the department of journalism. My last wish is that the department be granted school status,” he said.
The media convention is an annual event organized by the Department of journalism and Communication at Makerere University.
