Games and sports are important in every society. They often reflect the culture of the country in which they are played. In many ways, sports define society and offer opportunities for people, to make a living. They also promote togetherness and are a source of entertainment and an escape from our everyday tasks.
In her own words, this is Barbara Ninsiima’s fairy tale on how she earned a place in the Uganda Women’s (U20) national team in less than a year of trying out the sport.
Rugby is a team sport that I got introduced to in August 2022. I was a second-year student at Uganda Christian University, Bishop Barham University College when I played my first game.
In all honesty, the game is not only remarkable but scary. The scariest part is the fear of being squashed by the gigantic playmates. Rugby, however, has the capacity to boost one’s confidence, and self-esteem and enhance a player’s instincts and skills.
I commend my friend Swiffah Nduhukire who introduced me to this sport. She convinced me to start playing and to my great surprise and pleasure, during circuit one in Masaka, I became the best player.
My team came in second position during the first circuit. In the second and third circuits, we emerged winners gaining two trophies of the circuits and scooping the tournament trophy.
I remember that day vividly, the 3rd of September 2022 my birthday, we received the trophies at Kakyeka stadium in Mbarara. It was indeed the happiest moment in my life. As I played, I was motivated by the cheers of the spectators and the loud ululations were like food to me.
A week after the tournament, I was invited to try out for the Uganda Women’s Rugby under twenty (U20) team. The Western Rugby Manager facilitated my journey to Kyadondo for the tryouts.
Fortunately, I was shortlisted for the team and though I was new, I quickly adapted and fitted in with my teammates. Our first game was against Kenya, played at Wankulukuku Mutesa 2 stadium, in which I scored the third try in the five-nil win.
My second game was with Zimbabwe where we lost and were knocked out. That marked the end of my participation in that tournament but I came back with joy and happiness.
Am grateful to God, for the talent he has bestowed upon me. I am the first female from my family and from my University to play for my nation Uganda.
I have established myself on the National team and hope to play more games in the future.
I am grateful to the University management, Uganda Christian University Bishop Barham College, especially the Principal Dr. Alice Jossy Kyobutungi Tumwesigye, the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Simon Turyakira, and the Coach Mr. Alex Twinamasiko for encouraging the sports culture at the University.
On a special note, I thank my parents Mr. and Mrs. Brown Caleb from Rukungiri District, my most loved boyfriend Leni, and my best friends Leticia, Brina, and Swiffa for their constant encouragement and support.
