News reaching our desk from indicates various halls of residence at Makerere University have erupted into mini chaos after residents there got wind of the University Council’s decision, following a day-long meeting, to maintain a tuition policy that requires students to have paid 100% tuition within six weeks.
For now, UH hall appears to be the center of skirmishes as students there have reportedly set aflame car tyres to express their disappointment amidst “wewe!” chants, synonymous with all strikes at the University.
Opoya Mike, a former guild presidential aspirant of Makerere University has been reportedly arrested at University Hall for what some sources are claiming to have been inciting violence as the tyres were being burnt while others are saying he was simply addressing UH residents shortly before the arrest. It is unclear where he is being detained at. Police was forced to fire live bullets to disperse UH residents who were becoming rowdy.
At Nkrumah hall, “wewe!” chants were also heard at around 10pm before police was quickly deployed, which forced the agitated students there to scamper back to their rooms.
