Following today’s meeting between the university council and leaders of the Makerere University academic staff, the university’s lecturers have agreed to end their strike and resume lectures on Monday after nearly a full month of not teaching.
The decision was reached after a successful interaction that was held today where the lecturers gave the council more time to negotiate with the administration on how to reinstate all the suspended lecturers back to their initial job positions.
“We are trusting the goodwill of the new council to do the due diligence of the ongoing investigations into lecturers’ suspension,” Edward Mwavu, the Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA) vice chairperson said.
The decision by lecturers to end the strike has come few days after the council trashed Prof Barnabas Nawangwe’s committee, which he had set up to probe the suspended officials and transferred the responsibility to the appointments board. It is believed that lecturers have slowly started gaining trust in the council which is under new leadership.
The one month strike was sparked off earlier last month when the Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe suspended the MUASA chairperson Dr. Kamunyu Muhwezai, Bennet Magara, the Makerere Administrative Staff Association chairperson and his General Secretary, Joseph Kalema over misconduct.
