Makerere University students are holding a mega strike tomorrow, Wednesday October 7, Campusbee can reliably confirm. The students are hellbent on seeing the university council scrap the 100% tuition policy that requires all students to clear all their tuition within the first 6 weeks of the semester.
Nyesiga Gilbert Kahima, a stduent at the ivory tower posted; “The strike is on tomorrow. we want the policy scrapped off. come with your gown, a bottle of water plus a good sized stick. #we build build for the future #movingforward.”
There is a current Mini-Kimeeza of sorts taking place at Mitchell hall planning for the ‘big’ day tomorrow. “If he (the guild president) does not have the balls to lead a strike we are ready, we ought to strike tomorrow come rain, come shine,” student at Mitchell Hall said.
Just a few minutes ago, Bala Bwiruka the Guild President of the biggest public university in the country posted on his Faceboo timeline; “Gallant Makerereans, I promised to address you about the Guild’s next course of action in relation to the outcome of the Council meeting held today. Now that the outcome is not what we had hoped for; now that Council has resolved to uphold the requirement to pay 100% of tuition within 6 weeks DESPITE OUR VEHEMENT PROTESTATIONS, I am discussing with my team the way forward. STAND FIRM, we as students have a right to education, and the guild will not sit back and watch as that right is being threatens by such unfair policies! I will be addressing you later tonight about the Guild’s next course of action.”
John Wanda also a student at Makerere said; “Guys, striking is not the answer to the problems we face in this world. We want Makerere to be the great Research University it wants to be, not a hub of violence and tactics that don’t rise to the level of intellectual achievement you need to be known for. If you offer good alternatives and solutions, you will have the public on your side. if you think striking is the answer, you lose the support of those who seek fair solutions. I speak as a former Makererian and Guild official.”
