Mbarara University government sponsored students have today gone on what they describe as a peaceful strike protesting that the university increases their living out allowances as the standards of living surpass the allowances they receive.
All activities at the university have been brought to a standstill although very few students are participating in the strike.
“We are given living out allowance of only 468,000 which covers rent and feeding which makes it so little compared to the cost of leaving and also compared to other universities. We are supposed to be given Shs 818,000,” a student told this website.
The students are marched from campus to main street…they are now passed the round about proceeding to the RDC’s office to petition for the increment of fees and also high retake policy of shs200,000. Kenneth Oroma, the Campus Bee reporter on ground says that police is escorting the peaceful demonstrators and have not tried to disperse them.
Campus Bee will bring more details.
