The Buganda Road Magistrate’s Court has ordered Police in Wandegeya to release all the Makerere University students that were arrested during the tuition strikes that rocked the university the whole of this week.
The matter that arose before the Magistrate of the Court His Worship Robert Mukanza considered the over 50 students that are currently in detention across police cells and mostly at Wandegeya Police Station.
Through their lawyers, Eron Kiiza and Moses Okwalinga, the students were protected by the Right to Personal Liberty that is guaranteed in the constitution of Uganda where no one can be detained by Police for over 48 hours without known charges placed against them.
The Magistrate ordered that the students be unconditionally released from the Police custody and that all Police Officers respect and go by the court’s decision. This was today at 2:30 pm.
