In a cabinet meeting that sat yesterday August 30th, the Government of Ugandan through the Ministry of Education and Sports revealed a plan of restoration of Makerere university’s Main building (Ivory tower).
It was approved that the entire building be demolished and rebuilt to match its previous form and appearance as a way of conserving the architectural character of the building.
This was recommended by the two technical committee for the restoration of the ivory tower. It was agreed that before demolition of the remaining parts of the building a detailed photographic and conservatory study and documentation will be conducted.
All key elements will be retrieved and stored in the museum called the main building museum 2020. Upon construction, the management of the university has been tasked to ensure that all CCTV cameras in the building are fully functional and monitored from the central surveillance room at all times.
According to the plan, the main hall which was not affected by the fire will remain. However, it will be refurbished and equipped with modern technologies.
