If you bounced on Saturday while you planned on having your night fun at Sundowners, well wonder no more, the Lumumba Avenue based night hangout spot that attracts a section of campusers and corporates was shut down over debts.
Sundowners Bar and Grill operators were on Wednesday last week faced with a fracas after the real owner re-surfaced demanding for rent arrears close to $2500 monthly (amounting to $30,000 for the year).
They have since abandoned their social media pages and they last posted on Friday informing the public that they will be closed. However, Campus Bee learns that they were shut down.
What happened
The premises where Sundowners Bar and Grill operates were rented out to a handler that later rented it out to Sundowners and it’s to the handler that Sundowners was inclined to pay all rent arrears. However, the handler that was taking care of the premises was not delivering payments to the real owner and these accumulated for one year. When the real owner of the premises returned from abroad he demanded that he be paid for the one year he had not received rent payments.
When Sundowners management tried to get a hold of the handler who was receiving the rent, he was nowhere to be seen. This didn’t go down harmoniously for the real owner who demanded that he be paid all his rent. Sundowners management maintains that they had fully settled all their rent dues but unfortunately the handler had disappeared with the money.
It’s then that the real owner confiscated Sundowners’ equipment and valuables claiming he owes the bar a fortune they will have to pay first and clear fully.
Sundowners bar is now fully under lock-down and operators nearly shed tears when the owner of the premises moved to confiscate bar’s property. Management has not yet issued a statement on the matter.
“We have rectified the issue. The small misunderstanding was resolved but we shall be closed for a while as renovations go on,” Ivan, the proprietor told this reporter.
