BY BENJAMIN M. AHIKIRIZA
Many of us are yet to come to terms with Doribert’s sad, disturbing and violent passing which occurred in the wee hours of Sunday morning. To many of us Doribert was not just a friend. He was a brother whose heart opened to everyone – one of the kindest people to ever walk the earth. He loved and embraced those around him.
Those of us who knew him, who loved him, who shared dreams for the future with him when we made it to Law School – we will miss the boy and the man he turned out to be. We will miss the polished and compassionate Lawyer he intended to make. We will miss the friend who was always quick with a funny line and bright smile.
We will mourn the man who is gone, whom we lost so tragically, but we will remember him and remember that above all he would want us to remember him as he lived on the fearless age of what was possible. Doribert did live a full life despite his too soon death.
On behalf of Makerere’s Law Class of 2020, let me pass our deepest condolences on the passing of our friend, brother, and classmate, Doribert Atwesigye to his family and friends. As the days and weeks pass and as you return to life’s normal routine may you continue to feel the love and comfort of family and friends. May your hearts be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times with Doribert as you celebrate a life well lived albeit cut too short by a ruthless gun totting human being.
Doribert’s murder challenges those of us in the Justice sector to seek Justice for him and other many Ugandans whose lives have been ended in similar circumstances.
May God bless his soul.
The writer is a former classmate, cousin and friend of the deceased Doribert Atwesigye who was shot dead on Sunday morning by a security guard at Kabojja Hostel in Kyambogo University. He will be laid to rest today in Biharwe, Mbarara District – western Uganda.
