Fort Portal Nursing School (FINS) has been upgraded to Fort Portal Medical University (Fins Medical University) becoming the first university offering only medical related courses in Uganda. The former nursing school now boasts of both boys and girls pursuing various courses in nursing and midwifery.
The university was inaugurated in a function attended by Gen. Caleb Akandwanaho alias Salim Saleh, the Head of Operation Wealth Creation, as the chief guest upon being approved by the National Council of Higher Education (NCHE). NCHE approved the establishment of the university after conducting a tour of the new Fins medical laboratory and hospital in December last year.
According to the director and founder of the university, Mr. Victor Kalezi, the new Fins medical university will offer a wide spectrum of medical courses only and courses related to medicine and human health.
“This is the first ever medical university in Uganda. Like our motto says saving lives is our passion, we shall aim at producing and training professional health practitioners and life savers,” Kalenzi told Campus Bee.
Kalenzi who was orphaned at a tender age and grew up from a humble background, studied a business course from Makerere University Business School (MUBS) to acquire business knowledge that enabled him to establish an institution that trains doctors.
“While growing up, I had great passion of becoming a doctor but nature did not allow me. As I grew up, I defied nature and doubled my passion and decided to produce doctors and nurses instead,” he recalls.
The university which sits on a large chunk of land is located within Fort Portal Municipality and will make its first admissions for the August intake this year.
According to the management, the university has already installed a vice chancellor and is already accepting applications for this August intake offering Bachelors in Nursing, Midwifery Science, Medical Education, Environmental Health, and Laboratory Technology among others.
