It seems to us that the dust is not about to settle as former Makerere University Kampala Guild President now Member of Parliament Hon. Adeke Anna moved a motion in Parliament yesterday on 29th March, 2018 requesting the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah to permit Parliament to inquire into the allegations of sexual harassment in institutions of learning in Uganda.
This comes after numerous reports of sexual harassment in Institutions of Learning, the latest being Makerere University’s Dr. Swizen Kyomuhendo, from the College of Humanities and Social Science who was suspended from the said University.
After a series of outcries by students in various Universities and Human Rights Activists for a permanent solution to Sexual harassment in learning Institutions, one could argue that the move by Hon. Adeke could be a great step towards achieving this goal as soon as it attracts the attention of Parliament.
In response to Hon. Adeke’s request, the Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah stated that Parliament should pause this motion, re-draft it properly and bring it on Tuesday, 3rd April, 2018.
The news of the move by Hon. Adeke excited many students who were desperate for a permanent solution. A one Tumushabe Gerald from Makerere School of law told Campus Bee that he was impressed by the fact that Hon. Adeke Anna has not forgotten her roots.
We await to see Parliaments solution to the this intolerable vice in our Academic Institutions.
