News reaching our desk is that former Makerere guild prime minister Jothan Yamurebire Burobuto has withdrawn his candidature from the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) race. In a letter authored to the Speaker of the Ugandan parliament Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga, the 24 year old expresses disgust, contempt and ridicule for certain MPs who he says instead of listening from his side, only concentrated on milking out the little upkeep money he had on himself.
In a four paged letter, Burobuto talks about his marketing manager approach vision that he had for EALA and how he aimed at bridging the leadership gap by bringing the aforementioned generation in charge of their destiny. However, he gets unapolegetic while referring to a specific brand of MPs who, instead of weighing him on his credentials, concentrated on fleecing the little sums he had in his pockets.
“Obviously there are those that are a good crop however the majority unfortunately are a bad crop”, part of the letter reads.
Until now, there has been undocumented talk about instances of MPs demanding money from prospective EALA candidates.
When we contacted Burobuto about these very serious allegations that he raised in his letter to the Speaker, in a telephone interview, he said,
“It’s true in it’s entirety …. and I will expose all the dirt in detail and even tell stories of MPs that asked for money some even as little as shillings 20,000.”
In the letter’s conclusion, Burobuto applauds a certain breed of MPs that he referred to as “good” and only wishes that the rest were like them. They include Thomson Tayebwa, Gerald Karuhanga, Joseph Ssewungu, Robert Centenary, Monica Amoding, Justine Ayebazibwe and Stecia Kizza among others.
Burobuto also expressed desire to, in future, come up with a detailed story of this ‘horrifying experience” (as he chooses to call it) with country top dogs.
