President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has appointed Dr Mercy Faith Lakisa as the new Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs in the 2026–2031 cabinet.
Dr Lakisa currently serves as the Woman Member of Parliament for Alebtong District and is widely recognized for her active involvement in youth leadership and national politics within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM).
A trained dental surgeon by profession, Lakisa first rose to national prominence during her student leadership days at Makerere University, where she served as Guild Vice President.
She also serves as the NRM Youth League Vice Chairperson for Northern Uganda, a role through which she has mobilized and advocated for youth participation in politics and national development.
Her appointment has been viewed by supporters as a strategic move aimed at strengthening youth representation and children’s affairs within government, particularly at a time when Uganda continues to grapple with unemployment, education access, and youth empowerment challenges.
Lakisa joins the new cabinet with a background that blends healthcare, student leadership, and grassroots political mobilization — qualities many believe position her well to engage Uganda’s young population.
Her elevation to cabinet also marks another milestone for youthful leaders transitioning from student activism into top national leadership roles.
