Former Uganda National Students’ Association (UNSA) President Jothan Yamureebire Burobuto is eyeing the Makerere University Convocation Chairman seat that is currently occupied by National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi, Campus Bee has learned.
Burobuto, who served the Makerere University student’s guild as Guild Speaker and Ag. Guild President on two separate occasions (81st Guild and 83rd Guild) is making big moves into the alumni association of the university using a pressure group, Save Convocation Initiative (SCI).
In a letter to the Academic Registrar (Secretary to the Convocation), Burobuto has sought clarity on streamlining the electorate to ensure that an actual election is carried out (with free and fair voting) unlike what he termed as a “selection” that was used the last time they were choosing leaders.
The said letter has been received by the Academic Registrar’s office, and we await his response on the matter.
The Makerere University Convocation is made up of all graduates and members of staff of the university or any other member that the University Council may authorize and admit to be part of it. It is a very instrumental organ in the operations of the university and has a seat on the Makerere University Council – the highest decision-making organ in the university.
The other candidates that Campus Bee has learnt are in the race include Justus Nuwagiira the current Finance Secretary of Dr. Tanga Odoi’s cabinet, George Turyamureeba who works in the finance department in the Makerere Administration as an auditor but he is a lawyer by profession, and Deus Kamunyu the current Convocation Publicity Secretary and former chairman of Makerere University Academic Staff Association (MUASA). Sources say that Gerald Karuhanga who lost to Dr. Tanga Odoi last time is also interested.
Burobuto was not available to confirm or deny whether he is eyeing the chair or another position on the Convocation. All our calls to his known numbers went unanswered. At the moment, he is also the Executive Director of Uganda Youth Network (UYONET) an umbrella organisation for youthful non-governmental organisations in Uganda.
