Four people have been arrested over the murder of a South Sudanese student, Lam Duot Deng Duot of the International University of East Africa located in Kasanga. The brutal killing happened on June 23 2018, at Dubai Washing Bay. The Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesman, Mr Luke Owoyewogyire said the four were arrested on Thursday.
According to the police, Duot was accused of having tried to rob a breastfeeding mother and was suspected to have been involved in criminal activities in the area. That day he didn’t return home. This prompted Duot’s cousin to report a disappearance case and was advised to check at Mulago mortuary where his body was positively identified on June 28.
“A team of officers from Kireka expedited the investigations around the scene of crime area and a number of arrests were made. Onlookers positively identified the people who were involved in the mob action. The witnesses told police of how the suspects, aged between 20 and 36, killed the young boy mercilessly even when he pleaded for his life. They revealed that the suspects threw verbal insults towards his nationality as they carried out the heinous act,” said Mr Owoyewogyire.
“It is unaccepted for citizens to break the law and all those involved should face the music. We appreciate the involvement of communities in assisting the police to fight crime but we are disappointed by those who take the law into their own hands‚” he added.
The four suspects are currently detained at Kira Division Police Station while waiting to be arraigned in Kira Magistrate’s Court this week and charged with murder.
