Federation For Uganda Medical Interns (FUMI) has called for a end to the months’ long Medical interns’ sit-down strike. Through the intern’s leadership, a meeting held with Uganda Medical Association, and top management of Ministry of Health had the following resolutions;
- Ministry of Health recognizes the challenges that medical interns face, and acknowledge the
need for increased financing to improve the welfare of all medical interns in the country thus
will join them to push for a supplementary budget since the final national budget is already
concluded. - Ministry of Health and the medical interns’ leadership to write officially to the office of the
prime minister to intervene and request for a supplementary budget to be passed to cater for
the increment of medical interns’ allowances following parliamentary recommendations that
were made and were brought to the attention of the prime minister through a letter addressed
to his office by parliament right before the parliament was dissolved. - A committee comprising of medical interns’ leadership, UMA, and Ministry of Health Officials is
formed that will be responsible for the negotiations and follow up of the matter with the office
of the Prime minister to have a supplementary budget passed. - UMA together with the medical interns’ leadership continue to pursue the pending appointment
to meet HE the president of Uganda and when achieved, Ministry of Health officials will
accompany medical interns’ leadership and make an official presentation to HE the President to
support and defend the need to have interns’ allowances increased in the shortest time possible - It was also communicated that the allowance for the months of April, May, and June has already
been released and has reached the hospital accounts, all interns are expected to be receiving
that money anytime soon as we wait for the next financial year.
Following this discussion, two meetings have been held between interns’ leaders and medical interns
countrywide, and it was unanimously agreed to suspend the strike in the best interest of our patients
and completion of our internship training in the stipulated time as negotiations for enhanced pay go on
With the above 5 point-plan, the President of Federation of Uganda Medical Interns Dr. Nabwire Mary Lilian urged the medical interns to carry on with their duties.
“This is therefore is to inform and encourage all medical interns nationwide to resume work as the FUMI
leadership follows up with the relevant stakeholders on the matter and continues to engage in
negotiations,” he stated in a letter attached below.
