The government through the Ministry of Finance has agreed to pay over shillings 58 billion in this financial year to settle all staffers in public universities. This resolution was made during a cabinet meeting at the Entebbe Statehouse on Monday.

Speaking to press at the Media centre, government mouthpiece Ofwono Opondo confirmed the news and stated that the Ministry of finance in this financial year would clear a backlog which amounts to UGX 58 billion in order to prevent strikes that disrupt students and the whole nation at large. He also added that the lecturers will be remunerated basing on the newly revised salary structure in accordance with its approved enhancement structure. The lecturers had threatened to lay down their tools yet again if these arrears were not settled by the government.

It should be noted that it has been a common vice of public university lecturers to strike because of unpaid salaries, a thing that has negatively affected the quality of education in the nation. We only hope that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and that better quality education is delivered by the lecturers for good of the country.
