The Inter University Debate is a quarterly event organized by Center for Constitutional Governance which brings together 25 universities under the Hope Initiative Program to share and discuss key issues such as constitutionalism, accountability, Youth Un-employment, enjoyment of Fundamental Rights and Freedom et al.
The theme for this particular interface was “Promotion and Protection of Human Rights”. The debate took place at Hotel Brovad in Masaka and some of the questions that guided the debate included;
- What are the tenets of human rights?
- Is there observance of Human rights in Uganda?
- What has the government done to protect people against rampant killings and child sacrifice in the country?
- What is the way forward for the promotion and protection of human rights in Uganda?
I have to admit, this motion came at the right time where people needed explicit knowledge of their rights. During last week, a lot has been making headlines about the presidential age limit and many youths took a big part of the whole idea as earlier seen on Campus Bee.
The debate was a thunderous one as many youths urged that there was no observance of Human Rights basing on the stand that: there is neither freedom of speech nor association in the country. Opposition members are looked at as enemies of the state and that their rights are often infringed on. Many names were mentioned as per this, more so Dr. Kizza Besigye for his continued torture and arrest.
At the later hour the debate did come to an end and Gulu University which was spear headed by the Vice president, HE. Ainembabazi Tricia was announced the winner while Ndejje took the second position.
