The sudden death of Tooro’s King, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has left the Kingdom and the country mourning a monarch whose life on the throne began when he was just three years old.
King Oyo died at the age of 34 on Thursday night, August 27, after his health reportedly deteriorated while receiving medical care abroad.
Tooro Kingdom Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki confirmed that the Omukama died at approximately 10:00pm, describing his death as an “immeasurable loss” to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro and Uganda.
The cancer battle
Although the Kingdom has not officially disclosed the medical cause of death, reports emerging after the monarch’s death indicate that King Oyo had been battling advanced brain cancer.
Nile Post reported that sources said to be close to the situation indicated that the King had been diagnosed with brain cancer at an advanced stage and had been in a coma for days before his death.
A separate social media post circulating after his death specifically cited glioblastoma multiforme, an aggressive form of brain cancer, as the reported cause.
However, neither Tooro Kingdom nor the Royal Family has publicly confirmed the specific diagnosis.
This distinction is important because, earlier this month, Tooro Kingdom had strongly rejected reports that King Oyo was battling cancer and receiving treatment in the United States, describing the reports as false and misleading.
The events surrounding King Oyo’s final days unfolded rapidly.
On August 3, the Kingdom said the monarch was abroad for official engagements and further studies and dismissed reports that he was seriously ill.
But on August 27, the tone changed dramatically.
The Kingdom announced that the 34-year-old monarch was in critical condition, asking the people of Tooro and well-wishers across the world to pray for him.
Hours later, the Kingdom confirmed his death.
The rapid deterioration has now raised fresh questions about the illness that had reportedly kept the King under medical care for some time.
A deadly form of brain cancer
If the reports identifying glioblastoma are confirmed, King Oyo would have been battling one of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.
Glioblastoma develops in the brain and can progress rapidly, making treatment particularly difficult. The disease can affect brain function and, in advanced cases, cause severe neurological deterioration.
For King Oyo, reports suggest that the illness had progressed significantly before his death.
The Observer reported that the King had been hospitalised abroad for some time before his death, although the publication did not independently establish the exact medical diagnosis.
A life spent on the throne
King Oyo’s death is particularly poignant because he had spent almost his entire life as the Omukama of Tooro.
Born on April 16, 1992, he ascended the throne on September 12, 1995, following the death of his father, King Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III.
He was only three years old.
For nearly 31 years, he remained the face of the Tooro monarchy, eventually taking full operational control of the Kingdom as an adult.
His death therefore marks not only the end of a life cut short at 34, but also the end of one of Uganda’s longest modern royal reigns.
Despite the loss, Tooro Kingdom says the institution of the monarchy will continue.
Prime Minister Rwomiire revealed that King Oyo left behind a Prince who is heir to the throne, although his identity will be formally announced at an appropriate time in accordance with Tooro customs and traditions.
As the Kingdom prepares to bury its young monarch, attention is now turning to the final days of King Oyo’s illness, with many waiting for the Royal Family or Tooro Kingdom to officially clarify what cancer claimed the life of a King who had ruled since childhood.
For now, the reports of advanced brain cancer remain unconfirmed by the Kingdom — but they have placed the illness at the centre of questions surrounding King Oyo’s sudden death.
