Mohammed Abdu, Yahya Suleiman Babangida, Faisal Muhammad and Ashraf Mbuubi were picked up by patrol cops from a room at Chrysolite Guest house in Mbale Town [where one of the quartet was renting] after staff tipped them of activities they regarded suspicious.
According to Mr. Godwin Ochaki the District Police Commander, upon a search of the room, which was rented by one of the quartet, they found shisha flavors, a shisha pot, photos of different types with persons on military attire, military school honours and a Nigerian Identity card among other items. Three of the held are Nigerian nationals except Mbuubi who is Ugandan.
Mr Ochaki said Police had put ‘a holding charge of being in possession of narcotics as they get other charges to prefer on them and added that the suspects will exercise their right to bond after proper identification and documentation.
Earlier media reports had implied from the photos and military honours that one of the students is a soldier but this has been cleared by the police which says that they were taken in a Kyankwanzi patriotism school equivalent in Nigeria or Nakasongola Army School.
IUIU officials have also been visiting the suspects and coordinating with the Police on the matter. Asked which course the university will take or is yet to take, Mr Latib Juma, the Chief Security Officer stated, “as a matter of law, you can’t handle matters concurrently.” He says they have to let Police first do their work and that the suspects are to be subjected to a drug test sooner.
Another source that spoke on condition of anonymity says the University is awaiting the results from CPS whereafter the suspects will face the Disciplinary Committee.
IUIU doesn’t compromise on morality issues and breach of Islamic Code of conduct, wherefrom the campus’ rules and regulations are majorly derived.
