News just reaching in, Makerere Guild President Julius Kateregga and the Guild Speaker Ezra Byakutangaza have been arrested are detained at Wandegeya Police Station. The pair were picked up from the university today morning after they had successful gone to see Siperia Mollie, the female GRC who led yesterday’s strike.
The two according to a source within Police were arrested for inciting violence within the university and they have been arrested as a safety precaution to prevent further demonstrations within Makerere after the tuition strike hit day two.
The arrested Guild President had no kind words for the administration and Police as he was being whisked away into the Police station. “If they want to arrest, let them arrest the entire student body but we shall not waver until our demands are met” Kateregga told Campus Bee.Lectures at Makerere University have been interrupted as 15% tuition increment enters day two. Teargas and rubber bullets are being fired.
“Our demands are very clear, we seek the immediate reinstatement of Siperia Mollie from suspension, the immediate halting Of the cumulative tuition increment, immediate degazetting of the ‘Council’ Students Guild Electoral Reforms and immediate improvement of sanitation in Halls Of Residence. If we don’t get that, we shall not stop” Kateregga added.
The two join several other students that are still detained at Wandegeya Police over the strike yesterday and today morning.
