Makerere University Guild President Mr Ivan Ssempijja and other students have today been intercepted and arrested by police in Kampala.
Mr Ssempijja had led a group of students who were marching to the offices of Ministry of Education and Sports to deliver a petition which seeks to address the online studies challenges amongst students.
In their petition dated 26 July 2021, the Guild president demanded for waiver on functional fees which are attached to the fees students pay per academic year.
Among other issues, the president demands reversal of 12% internet tax to facilitate ease of accessibility to learning.
He also demands that the 15% cumulative tuition increment policy is halted in light to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The President was also requesting the education ministry to come out with a comprehensive plan for full reopening of university for physical learning to continue, including a clear plane for mass vaccination of students.
