The Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) has today arrested Capt. Ronald Lubeera, one of the force’s senior officers following the Military Police’s brutal actions during their execution of work in curbing violence at Makerere University.
Lubeera, who is in command of the Military Police Detach is being detained at the Military Police Headquarters in Makindye, Campus Bee has learned. The developments have been confirmed by the UPDF spokesman Brig Richard Karemire who further confirmed that the arrested officer is currently under investigation.
“A Board of Inquiry led by Lt Col Richard Ochen Okum has been established to look into what exactly happened,” Karemire said. He added that the arrest has been done in what he termed as “committed to maintaining its high standards and pro-people stance.”
The soldiers, who were deployed at Makerere Univeristy appeared in several videos and photos where they physically manhandled both students and members of the media. This was during a demonstration against the new 15% tuition increment passed by the Makerere University administration .
The army’s brutal actions were condemned by several organizations and personalities including; the US Embassy, Parliament, the Uganda Human Rights Commission and others. The events forced President Yoweri Museveni to order for military immediate exit from Makerere earlier this week.
