Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Health have chided Kampala International University upon producing what they called fake medical student graduates “whose quality and benefit to this country should be investigated”.
According to a local newspaper, the committee that was meeting to discuss the Ministry of Health’s policy statements for the 2016/17 budget cycle on Monday and Tuesday this week has demanded an investigation the quality of doctors trained from Kampala International University (KIU) whom the MPs on that committee referred to as “half-baked graduates that spend more time chatting on social media than attending to students”.
Speaking about the graduates, the Chairperson of the health committee Dr Medard Bitekyerezo did not mince his words. “You find one who scored zeros at A-level also admitted at the university to study medicine. I spoke to the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) and they said everything was okay; how can such be okay?” Bitekyerezo fumed.
The Newspaper also quotes Diana Atwine, the State House director of the health monitoring unit, saying she has visited several hospitals found doctors from KIU medical school, to be largely ignorant the medical profession which was attributed to a lack of supervision by the ministry of education and other relevant authorities like the National Council for Higher Education.
“They are not trained, not supervised and in the next five years they are the ones the country will have as its cream. It’s a pity that our children are going to be managed by these people,” Atwine is quoted as telling the MPs.
One of KIU’s objectives is to “To produce highly skilled and competent graduates capable of making independent and wise decisions which will enable them to become respected members of society and contribute to their professions, the nation and the global community”.
By press time KIU could not be immediately reached for a comment.
