While appearing on NTV Mwasuze Mutya show on Monday, Desire Nampewo, 24, a wife to Julius Ssekitoleko revealed that she is five months pregnant and can barely afford to put food on the table. The 24-year-old also revealed that she was recently evicted from their single room in Kasanga over five months’ rent arrears and she is currently staying with her sister.
Julius Ssekitoleko is a Kampala University student who doubles as an Olympic weightlifter who had travelled to Japan to represent Uganda in the 56 kg category before he went missing. Ssekitoleko was first reported missing last Friday after he failed to turn up for a coronavirus test. He was later found and brought back to Uganda and he is currently under arrest.
According to Nampewo, she moved in with Sekitoleko early last year but the cost of living was hard, adding that sometimes they couldn’t afford food. She narrated that the weightlifter sold his boda boda before he traveled to Tokyo. The Kampala University student gave Nampewo UGX 150,000 to buy some baby items and food when he is away.
The situation worsened when Nampewo was evicted from their single room in Kansanga over five months’ rent arrears. The pregnant 24 year-old has not been receiving antenatal care due to financial challenges.
While speaking on NTV, she revealed that Sekitoleko would have represented Uganda well if the sports fraternity supported him. She recounts a competition in Kenya where the weightlifter was paid only UGX 200,000 after the game.
