As Makerere University students were demonstrating against the 15% tuition increamement policy in mid October, some of the nights security officials from different bodies raided halls of residence and hostels of students both within and outside the university where many of the students were brutally tortured and their property were left destroyed.
It is alleged that in these raids some of the female students from hostels within Kikoni were sexually abused by security officials.
Later on the issue was brought to parliament to be discussed but it was bounced back because it lacked evidence. However some of the members of parliament on the education committee said the victims were not given enough time to narrate what really happened to them.
“Despite the efforts by a few victims to interface with the committee to disclose the agony and experience of sexual harassment, they expressed discomfort at Parliament and decided to go back. Parliament should take interest in further investigating the allegations since issues of sexual harassment cannot be concluded in a short time.” Hon Moses Kasibante is quoted saying.
This week, the committee decided to call Makerere University Guild President Julius Katerega and Bugiri MP Hon Asuman Basalirwa to go and provide the committee with enough Information and how they can be able to reach to the victims.
Few months ago Hon Basalirwa pledged to help in the parliamentary investigations. The committee will resume it’s work in January after the festive season.
