Makerere University vendors operating around Kavule popularly known as ‘Kikumi Kikumi’ were earlier this week asked to vacate the institution’s premises leaving many distressed.
According to some food vendors that the Bee approached, they have no where to go as that was their only source of income.
“They have chased us away from operating our businesses in this place again, all of us are just stranded.” one of the vendors said.
These added that prior to the directive of vacating the place, they would not pay any single penny for rent, as it was totally free of charge.
“We were not paying any rent fees, it was a matter of staging your business,” another vendor added.
Students residing in the hostels and rentals around Kavule would purchase food items like matooke, Irish potatoes, tomatoes, cabbages, onions among others from these vendors, and their departure is seemingly a big challenge to them.
Makerere University started constructing the Kavule perimeter wall in 2019 and completed works in April 2022.
